- Why does the United States have a salary?
Salary originated from the Latin word that referred to an 'allowance' given to Roman soldiers for buying salt. ( 'Salarium,' a derivative of sal, 'salt.') Salt was a valued and important commodity throughout this time period, which is one of the reasons why wars were fought, instead of being taken for granted as it is today. It broadened out to mean 'fixed periodic payment for work done,' and it passed into the Anglo-Norman period, however, it made its way into English-"salarie."
